America’s Secret Weapon: The Holy Souls Mass Apostolate

In the United States, there is an organization called the Holy Souls Mass Apostolate. Their mission is to release the poor souls from Purgatory through Masses for them, focused prayers, and various publications and multimedia.

The United States of America is the most powerful nation on this planet. Its military might, economic strength, and political influence is greater than any nation ever throughout history.

Another area where America excels is in religion. This nation is the quite possibly the most influential around the world with respect to spirituality. St. Peter, the first Pope, chose Rome to be the center of Christianity because this was the superpower of its day. If he could convert Rome, it would be far easier to convert the rest of the world.

In the United States, there is an organization called the Holy Souls Mass Apostolate. Their mission is to release the poor souls from Purgatory through Masses for them, focused prayers, and various publications and multimedia.

Susan Tassone founded this Apostolate in 1993 shortly after traveling to Medugorje. In 1994, she returned there and was healed from the ailments of being hit by a taxi while crossing a street 11 years earlier.

Susan had a great devotion to Our Lady since early childhood. Her earthly mother, Mary, was the head of the Altar and Rosary Society. She taught her daughter the importance of the rosary. In Medugorje, Susan learned the importance of praying for the holy souls in Purgatory.

She began helping the holy souls by raising over $700 for the purpose of having Masses said for them. When this money was presented to a priest, he said that he could not do the Masses. The problem is that the typical parish priest does not have the time to say many Masses for the holy souls and there are too few local priests who are available to do so. Fortunately, due to Divine Providence, Susan discovered the needs of foreign missionaries from a letter she just opened. Priests and bishops in third world countries desperately need money to help them in their ministries. Their request is for Mass stipends, of which they receive very few due to the extreme poverty of their parishes.

Susan saw an opportunity here. She could raise money to help these priests while helping the holy souls. The money would be used to have Masses to release those in Purgatory. This combination has been very successful over the years. Over $250,000 has been raised through donations for Masses. This translates to over 50,000 Masses. The priests get money for things like bread and wine for the Eucharist and daily needs for their vocation. The holy souls get the most powerful prayer possible to reduce their time in Purgatory. This is clearly a win-win scenario.

In addition to providing the suffering saints with Masses, Susan has written three books for them, The Rosary for the Holy Souls in Purgatory , The Way of the Cross for the Souls in Purgatory , and Praying in the Presence of Our Lord for the Holy Souls . These books are highly recommended for those serious about helping the souls in Purgatory. She presented the Way of the Cross book to the Pope in April 1999. The Holy Father joyfully received this great book.

Cardinal Francis George of Chicago is also a supporter of the Holy Souls Mass Apostolate. With regards to the Way of the Cross book, he says, What a better way to pray for the departed than by meditation on the final hours of the earthly life of Jesus. The Way of the Cross for the Holy Souls in Purgatory is a beautiful guide for this important devotion. As a side note, Susan gave the opening address preceding the Cardinal s Mass in 1998 which celebrated 1,000 years from the date when All Souls Day began.

As its name implies, The Holy Souls Mass Apostolate puts great emphasis on celebrating Mass for the souls in Purgatory. If you only have one devotion for the holy souls, then the holy Mass should be it. You can offer the Masses you attend for them, or have Masses said for the holy souls. A very powerful way to help the holy souls is through Gregorian Masses. This is an ancient practice started by Pope St. Gregory the Great. There is one Mass said every day for 30 days for an individual soul in Purgatory. The soul is released from Purgatory some time after the final Mass is said (its not known at when this actually occurs). Gregorian Masses are offered by Franciscan Missions, Inc. (P.O. Box 130, Waterford, Wisconsin 53185, Tel: 262-534-5470) for $130 USD.

Susan Tassone is doing a great service for the holy souls. If you would like to learn more about the Holy Souls Mass Apostolate or would like to order their video or audio tapes, write to Holy Souls Mass Apostolate, P.O. Box 618652, Chicago, IL 60661.
